Peacebuilding
Peacebuilding began in the 1970's, it was defined as the act of promoting sustainable peace by addressing the "root causes" of conflict and supporting peace management and conflict resolution. Now, Peacebuilding entails "disarming of waring factions to the rebuilding of political, economic, judicial and civil society institutions" (United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office). The purpose is to solidify peace and avoid relapse into conflict. Peacebuilding, unlike peacekeeping is done from the outside, by reassembling foundations of peace and providing tools for building upon those foundations. Humanitarian and development agencies are important for the process, as well as DPA Special Political Missions.
